The point of pointing

Before we get into steadying the dog up, it might be a good idea to get an understanding of why dogs point.

A point is nothing more than a pause before a pounce. All predatory animals pause/point to hold their prey. Watch a house cat sometime. They will pause/point before they pounce on a mouse. An alligator or a crocodile will pause/point before they strike their prey. A snake will pause/point before they strike their prey. Humans point. If you ever swat a fly and pause before you swat, your pointing!

Through years of good breeding and training, we’ve stretched out the pause to an extreme length of time for pointing dogs. This allows us time to get into the point and flush the bird ourselves, not the dog.
